Diabetes and cardiovascular disease, an impossible marriage

MARIGOT: As part of the French Federation of Cardiology’s Heart Week 2022, which takes place from September 19 to 29 with the theme of cardiovascular risk factors, the Saint Martin Santé association is implementing several actions.

The heart week highlights the risk factors related to cardiovascular diseases, the first cause of death in people over 65 and women and the second cause of death in men, to promote their prevention. It will end on Thursday, September 29, which marks World Heart Day. This particular week overlaps with another important week for the awareness work that characterizes Saint Martin Health, namely the National Diabetes Week, which takes place from September 23 to 30 and whose theme is “diabetes and tobacco”. Smoking is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes.

For Chantale Thibaut, president of the association Saint Martin Santé, the marriage between these two pathologies, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, is impossible to avoid, hence the two symbols represented separately during the actions, the heart on one side and the blue circle for diabetes. The association has set up prevention operations on the subject of cardiovascular diseases through different awareness, information and screening stands, in the form of public actions, open to all, allowing to educate and raise awareness of the various factors that can cause health problems. On the morning of September 24th, a screening for hypertension, diabetes and overweight was organized in the Bellevue garden with Speedy Plus in the company of a doctor and a nurse.

Many people had the opportunity to measure their blood pressure, heart rate, diabetes and, most importantly, to understand the numbers. High blood pressure and diabetes remain major risk factors for cardiovascular events, such as myocardial infarction or stroke. Four other risk factors are to be noted, tobacco, excess cholesterol, stress and sedentary lifestyle. In this regard, an “anti-sedentary” stand that emphasized the importance of regular physical activity was held at the Vanterpool stadium on September 26 in the morning and the entire Saint Martin Santé team moved it to the parking lot of the Quartier d’Orléans pharmacy in the afternoon, in order to inform the population of the differences between sedentary lifestyle and physical inactivity while guiding them towards the integration of regular physical activity into their daily lives.

The association offers many sports workshops for seniors throughout the year, the benefits are notable on the physical health of participants, so do not hesitate to approach Saint Martin Santé to learn about the program (see info). Today, this Wednesday, September 28, you can meet the team of the association from 10am to noon in its offices at 45 rue Constant Fleming in Concordia for a “nutrition” stand putting the importance of food back in the center through exchanges with a dietician on nutrition and national recommendations via the National Nutrition Health Program (PNNS). The heart week will end this Thursday, September 29 with a radio animation from 8 to 9 am to discuss live with listeners about the importance of taking care of its cardiovascular health, prevention in terms of lifestyle or treatment to delay the progress of pathologies. Your health is the most important thing to you and Saint Martin Santé helps you take care of yourself.
