Whale Festival on Sun. April 3rd at Orient Bay

ORIENT BAY: In partnership with the Nature Reserve, the associations Megaptera, Mon École Ma Baleine, Sem’ Ta Route, the Agoa Sanctuary, the Rotary Club and the Tourist Office, Metimer is launching the first edition of the “Whale Festival” which will take place this Sunday at Orient Bay.

From 2 to 7 p.m., discovery workshops, activities and craft stands will take over the village square with the aim of informing and educating the public, young and old alike, about this giant of the sea that can currently be seen in the waters of Saint Martin. Humpback whales gather in the area to reproduce and give birth between January and June.

The various organizers of this unique event are unanimous: it is essential to preserve this seasonal breeding area and the public is a major player in this preservation. The idea of going to meet the whale by putting it in the spotlight for a day was therefore obvious. In addition to reminding people of the strict rules in force concerning the observation of large marine mammals, the organizers also want to appeal to those who wish to be trained as whale watchers in order to have the ability to approach whales from a distance of between 100 and 300 meters while respecting the said rules and helping to maintain an up-to-date census of marine animals.

This Whale Festival will be an opportunity to meet scientists and discuss this sensitive issue with them. Two conferences will be held at the Chapelle theater. The first one will be free and dedicated to children, from 4 to 5 pm. The second one, for adults, will start at 6pm until 7:30pm with an entrance fee of €10. For the pleasure of the children, a drawing contest has been launched so that the children can express their artistic abilities inspired directly by this majestic marine animal. The winning drawing will be used to illustrate the poster of the next edition of the Whale Festival and the winners of the three most beautiful drawings will win a boat trip with their guide on board the Scoobydoo. The drawings are to be submitted on A4 format on the stand of Metimere on Sunday from 2pm.
