Six security guards sprayed in the face with caustic soda at the University Hospital of Martinique

MARTINIQUE: Sébastien Lecornu, Minister of Overseas France and Olivier Véran, Minister of Solidarity and Health, denounce “the cowardly and violent attack on the security guards of the Martinique University Hospital after they were sprayed in the face with caustic soda by demonstrators. The violence against the staff of the University Hospital of Fort-de-France has reached a new level,” they denounced in a statement sent to the press Friday morning.

Last Thursday, when the new director of the Fort-de-France University Hospital was officially meeting with union representatives, against a backdrop of contestation over compulsory vaccination and the health pass, “around thirty demonstrators tried to disrupt the meeting,” the statement said.

Six security guards were injured in the altercation, which occurred on the hospital site. The agents were sprayed in the face with caustic soda. The victims were treated immediately in the emergency room, but “it is feared that their visual acuity cannot be restored,” the ministers lamented. Legal action is underway.

“The ministers send their best wishes for the recovery of the victims and more broadly their full support to the agents of the University Hospital of Fort-de-France, regularly exposed to the violence of a minority whose claims can not justify such acts, “wrote the ministry.
