Shortly after takeoff from Juliana airport of flight TX527 at 19:14, the left engine of the Airbus A330 exploded with a loud noise that was particularly heard on the ground and caught fire.

The two pilots decided to activate the fire extinguisher system to avoid any risk of fire and reported the engine failure to the St. Maarten Air Traffic Services (ATS).

A “red code ” – absolute priority – was activated. The pilots made an emergency landing at Juliana Airport at 7:29 pm on one engine, with 42 tons of fuel on board.

The Air Caraibes Airbus A330 landed safely and there were no further incidents. In addition, no injuries were reported among the passengers and crew.
