Prefect calls for vigilance in light of increase in the number of cases

MARIGOT: The health situation in Europe is currently deteriorating with the increasingly rapid spread of the OMICRON variant. In St. Barthélemy and St. Martin, there has been an increase in the number of cases over the last week with 45 positive cases in St. Martin against 13 the week before, and 28 against 7 in St. Barthélemy.

Even if the statistics show a reduced level of presence of COVID, this acceleration of the circulation of the virus calls all inhabitants and economic actors of the territory to be cautious. The Prefect, Serge Gouteyron, therefore calls on all persons present on our islands to be cautious. The end of year celebrations, a time for family gatherings par excellence, must be the object of great vigilance on the part of all with reinforced respect for barrier gestures.

In addition, following certain undeclared events or events that did not respect the commitments made to the authorities, the prefecture’s services remind us that all public events or exceptional events organized by establishments receiving the public outside of their normal operations must be declared and authorized by the prefecture. To support the necessary mobilization of all, the services of the national gendarmerie will reinforce the controls of verification of these declarations.

Finally, for the evenings of December 24 and 31, 2021, bars and restaurants will remain closed at 2:00 a.m. In addition, an order prohibiting the sale of alcohol to take away from 8:00 p.m. and the consumption of alcohol on the public highway between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. will be issued for the evening of December 31st.

The latest positive rates observed in St. Barthélemy (7.3%) and St. Martin (3.4%) call for the utmost caution and strict compliance with health regulations.

If these figures are confirmed in the next few days, the Prefect will not fail to take much more restrictive measures. This is why the Prefect is calling on everyone’s civic sense and responsibility.
