Two days of training and awareness on road safety organized at Soualiga College

MARIGOT: The island of Saint Martin has experienced for many years catastrophic situations in terms of road safety. Dangerous behaviors on the road, aggravated by addictions to psychotropic products, generate numerous bodily injury and fatal road traffic accidents. Teenagers between the ages of 14 and 18 are often the victims of these road tragedies.

Faced with this situation, the Prefecture, the National Education Department of Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin, and the local authority of Saint-Martin wanted to implement a real risk reduction policy within the framework of the city policy. At the initiative of the Soualiga College, the Association Sécurité Routière SXM, chaired by Thierry Verres, conducted two days of training and awareness of Road Safety on November 16 and 17, 2021. The association COBRACED has reinforced these actions by making available the boxes “Idéasbox” of Bibliothèque sans frontière (Library without border).

This action allowed to raise awareness among more than 140 third grade students over two days through training workshops organized around the following themes: the fight against addictions to psychotropic drugs, the highway code with a strong focus on two wheels, the setting up of a two-wheel simulator and a motorized platform animated by a driving school partner (driving a real 49.9 cc scooter).

These schoolchildren from neighborhoods classified as part of the city’s policy or as part of the city’s active monitoring policy clearly appreciated these training sessions and will be keen to respect these safety instructions once they are on the road.
