The President reiterates his support to the fishermen of Saint Martin

MARIGOT: President Daniel Gibbs received the Union of Fishermen Sailors of St. Martin, last Wednesday, November 24, represented by Vanion Hodge.

As a reminder, Decree No. 2016-781 of June 10, 2016 recodifying the provisions relating to overseas of the rural and maritime fishing code allows, in its regulatory part, to provide a regulatory framework for the creation of a territorial committee of fisheries and marine husbandry in St. Martin, giving in particular the CCISM the possibility to host and organize this structure. The fishermen’s and aquaculture union of Saint Martin has therefore committed itself to setting up this fisheries committee but is encountering obstacles in the execution of its approach, which Vanion Hodge came to explain to the President of the Collectivité in order to benefit from his support. To date, Saint Martin has about twenty professional fishermen, a figure that has been constantly increasing in recent years.

In order to facilitate the functioning of the future territorial fisheries committee, an agreement will have to be signed with the CCISM, for the purposes of hosting and organizing the committee, which will have a role to play in numerous bodies such as the Nature Reserve, the Scientific Council of the Collectivity or the CMUBA, which deal with the management of fisheries resources and the preservation of natural resources.

President Gibbs recalled the commitment of the Collectivité which recently requested the CCISM to submit an application when the time comes, for the constitution of a Local Action Group for Fisheries and Aquaculture (GALPA), within the framework of the new European programming FEAMPA 2021/2027. This structure will serve above all as technical and financial support for the operation of the territorial fisheries committee. As far as national representation is concerned, Mr. Vanion HODGE already has a seat on the National Fisheries Committee. Nevertheless, St. Martin is waiting to know if legally the St. Martin fisheries committee will be duly represented there.

The President reiterated his support for the union and will send a letter to the Minister of the Sea, Annick Girardin, to support the fishermen’s initiative.

Daniel Gibbs also recalled that the Collectivity was also working on the creation of a slipway. This equipment is included in the budget and will be used by all users of the sea: fishermen, inter-island ferrymen, rescue services, and the Nature Reserve. The Collectivité has obtained the agreement in principle of the UT DEAL of Saint-Martin for the realization of this project.
