MULLET BAY: Last weekend, the “Tamarins” golfers of Saint-Martin won the traditional “Concordia Cup” against the St. Maarten Golf Association (SMGA)
This competition in match-play (1 point per hole won) by team and individual, sees each year the best golfers of the French side and those of the Dutch side confronting each other in the period of Sint-Maarten Day, which is also the anniversary of Concordia Treaty. This year the date was set for November 20 and 21.
Last Saturday at 8 am, 36 players in total started to play in “shot gun” formula (all at the same time from different holes) on the green fairways of Mullet Bay in teams “2 against 2” for 9 matches in “four ball” formula. At around 12:00pm the results were known: 6 to 3 for Saint-Martin which started the competition in good manner.
Then it was time to get some strength with a delicious meal offered by the Tourism Office of Sint Maarten who sponsored the event this year. Around 12:45 pm the players started again to compete on 18 holes still 2 against 2 but this time in formula “foursome”: the 2 players hit the same ball alternately until the end of the hole, a very delicate operation. At the end, the “Tamarins” increased their lead with the identical score of 6 to 3 which gave them a total of 12 to 6 for the first day.
The next day, the Sint Maarten team had to win 12 of the 18 individual matches and split a thirteenth match to hope to win with a minimum score of 18.5 to 17.5. A very difficult task. This unfortunately for our players did not happen, the French side team winning the individual matches of this Sunday with a score of 12 to 6.
Final score of the Concordia Cup 2021: 24 to 12 for Saint-Martin which wins for the 3rd consecutive year this beautiful competition based on the sign of friendship and conviviality despite our difference of language and origins (editor’s note: multiple origins what makes the originality of our friendly island).
The Concordia Cup Trophy “Jason Nyuiadzi” was presented by May Ling Chun, Director of Tourism, Government of St. Maarten to the team of St. Maarten.
Les Tamarins thanks the SMGA for the organization, Mullet Golf Course and its staff, the Tourist Office of Sint Maarten and the Cabinet François Anton for providing the players of Sint Maarten, the balls and the goodies.
SMGA thanks Sint Maarten Tourism Bureau, Mullet Bay Golf Course and its staff and Heavenly Water.
The next golf meeting will be on Saturday, December 11, for the SMGA Christmas scramble with Santa Claus costume contest and cart decorations. More information on golf in Saint-Martin: email@example.com.
