One year in prison for traveling with a fake PCR test

BRUSSELS: The Brussels Criminal Court on Monday handed down a prison sentence against a man who had tried to fly with a false PCR test. This is the second conviction of this type since the prosecution announced on April 27 that it would crack down on such facts. Between April 19th and June 11th, 576 people were surprised with falsified PCR tests.

The man arrived at the airport on May 7 with the result of a PCR test which appeared to indicate that he had tested negative for SARS-cov-2. A request was made to the laboratory in which the test would have been carried out and it emerged that no test with this reference number existed. The name of the man concerned did not appear in the laboratory’s database either. The traveler subsequently confessed to having bought a certificate at the price of 30 euros.

The public prosecutor’s office in Halle-Vilvoorde offered the man a settlement of 750 euros, but he refused. He then did not appear in court, which led to his default conviction on Monday to one year in prison and a fine of 4,000 euros.
