PHILIPSBURG: Philipsburg Jubilee Library recognized the winning poets of its Poetry Month at the closing-off ceremony on the library’s patio on June 29.
The first-place winners were Kevin C. James, Gracelyn Toulon, and Diya Asrani in the adult, secondary school, and primary school categories, respectively. The second-place prize went to poets Orlando Patterson, Sade Sherriff, and Jathan Edward.
A selection of people who submitted their poems were invited to recite their entries at the ceremony.
Author and poet Fabian Adekunle Badejo hosted the ceremony where attendees were delighted to the artistic reveries of burgeoning poets.
The poetry contest was open to persons of all ages and contestants were grouped into three categories: adults, secondary school, and primary school. The contest was presided over by expert judges who graded the submitted poems based on criteria relating to the use of descriptive language, linguistics, rhythm and flow, sound pattern or repetition, and use of regional or local themes, among other aspects.
