Italy: 1 – England: 1 (3-2 on penalties)

Italy on top of Europe!

Incredible final of the Euro and fabulous Italy which offered itself yesterday evening at Wembley Stadium, at the expense of the “Three Lions” (1-1, 3-2 t.a.b.), the second title of European champion of its history after that of 1968. It all started in the worst possible way for the Italians, who had to summon up all their resilience to crucify an England team that had so much faith in them in the penalty shootout.

Italy is again on top of Europe, 53 years after its first title in the competition. Roberto Mancini’s men, who were trailing in the second minute against an England that had been ahead for a long time physically, needed penalties to win the 2021 edition. And it was Gianluigi Donnarumma who was the strong man of this event, stopping two opposing shots on goal. Italy extended their unbeaten streak to 34 matches in all competitions. England will regret having opted for an overly defensive approach after opening the scoring.

In the end, it was the most playful team that won. The one behind which a whole continent or almost a whole continent had lined up before the match. The one of a coach, Roberto Mancini, who knew how to restore its lost luster after the fiasco of the non-qualification for the 2018 World Cup (34 matches without defeat now). That of two unbreakable grandpas, Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini, 70 years between them.

For the Squadra Azzura, the return home looks great!
