President Jovenel Moïse assassinated at his home by a commando
HAITI: The Haitian president, Jovenel Moïse, was assassinated yesterday morning at his home by a commando formed of foreign elements, announced the outgoing Prime Minister, Claude Joseph. The president’s wife was injured in the attack and hospitalized, he said. He called for calm and said the police and army would maintain order.
“The president was assassinated in his home by foreigners who spoke English and Spanish. They attacked the residence of the president of the Republic,” said Claude Joseph. “The security situation is under control,” he said. Coming from the business world, Jovenel Moïse, 53, had been elected president in 2016 and took office on February 7th, 2017.
State of siege
The Prime Minister declared this Wednesday the “state of siege” granting enhanced powers to the executive. “In the strict application of Article 149 of the Constitution, I have just chaired an extraordinary council of ministers and we have decided to declare a state of siege over the entire country,” he decreed during a speech in Creole, broadcast on social networks, assuring that this death “would not go unpunished.”
Claude Joseph promised that “the perpetrators, the assassins of Jovenel Moïse would pay for what they have done before the law”. “It is democracy and the Republic that must win. The dark forces will lose”, he stated.
