JAPAN: Massive mudslides in central Japan have claimed several lives. The city of Atami in Japan is gutted by a huge river of mud in the middle of which rescuers were trying this Sunday to find survivors. They knocked over houses, buried buses and cars. Little hope given the damage and violence of this climatic event. The mudslides swept away cars, electricity pylons and buildings.
A total of 130 houses were swept away in this city of 37,000 inhabitants. The images broadcast by Japanese television are striking. Pedestrians must flee to reach the floors of the houses still standing.
