Australian landscape covered with spider webs after flooding

VICTORIA: The people of the Gippsland region in the state of Victoria are living the nightmare of arachnophobes. After enduring heavy rains for several days, thousands of cobwebs have appeared, sometimes extending over a kilometer in length.

Residents were struck by the natural phenomenon. It had never happened on such a scale. “It wasn’t scary, it was beautiful. Everything was wrapped in this magnificent silk spider web, on all the trees and fences “, one resident was quoted as saying. Another resident of the region described the phenomenon as narcotic.

In fact, this technique is well known to experts. This is a survival tactic implemented by spiders called “ballooning”, where they throw silk to climb higher ground to escape the rain. The webs should disintegrate over the course of the week.
