TEHRAN: The Iranian Navy announced on Wednesday the sinking of one of its largest vessels over 200m long in the Arabian Sea, after hours of fighting a blaze of obscure origin.
The crew of this auxiliary ship, the Kharg, was able to be evacuated before the vessel sank, off the port of Jask in southern Iran, a Navy statement said.
According to the Iranian Navy, the fire broke out on Tuesday in “one of the systems” of the ship. The press release does not give any additional details, in particular on the cause of the fire.
Relief fought “for 20 hours” after the sailors were evacuated to the coast, “but given the spread of the fire, the Kharg’s rescue mission failed and the ship sank near Jask,” writes Marine.
