CAY HILL: St. Maarten Medical Center has opened its state-of-the-art MRI Suite, a part of its Radiology Department.
The MRI Suite brings down the country’s cost of referrals abroad and will provide more convenience to the community as travelling abroad for medical procedures is never a fun thing to do, according to SMMC Supervisory Council Vice Chairman Jim Rosen.
SMMC Medical Director Dr. Felix Holiday said as SMMC continues to build the St. Maarten General Hospital (SMGH), it will not wait to offer medical expansions until the new hospital doors are opened to the public.
Government Inspector General for Public Health Dr. Earl Best said of the newest addition: “The project was complex as it had many moving parts due to the sourcing of equipment from both Europe and the United States while construction of the MRI Suite at SMMC was ongoing.”
SMGH Project Manager Erika van der Horst who is also in charge of biomedical equipment sourcing, said the hoisting of the machine through a tight opening on the roof of the MRI suite was a meticulous exercise that was well executed by the construction team.
MRI exams can only be requested by an SMMC specialist.
