Two deaths since the start of 2021 climbing season on Mt. Everest.

A Swiss climber successfully reached the summit but sadly experienced difficulties on his descent which proved fatal even though two Sherpas with oxygen were sent to help.

An American climber was between the camp and the summit but had to turn around because of snow blindness and exhaustion but despite additional oxygen he sadly succumbed.

HACE (high altitude cerebral oedema) increased fluid causes swelling around the brain, one of the main causes of fatalities.

St. Maarten climber, Desiree Winkel, is not attempting Mt. Everest (8,848.86m,) she is attempting Island Peak which has an elevation of 6189m above sea level.

Altitude sickness is a concern to all who attempt to climb mountains.
