Arrival numbers foretell ‘amazing summer’

POND ISLAND: The weekly air arrivals for St. Maarten are foretelling “an amazing summer” for hospitality and tourism, according to Tourism and Economic Affairs Minister Ludmilla de Weever.

She announced this week that the highest weekly air arrivals so far for 2021 clocked in at 6,634. And, arrival numbers are only expected to grow and outpace the busiest week of pandemic year 1 – 2020: the last week of December which had 7,553 arrivals. However, the majority of those headed to yachts or over to St. Barths.

Commenting on the growing number of arrivals, De Weever said: “What that says is that we can expect an amazing summer, because we have new airlines coming on with Frontier and additional flights American and Delta Airlines … All in all it is looking like a really positive time and a good year.”

What also bodes well for tourism and economic recovery is the return of cruising to St. Maarten with the home-porting Celebrity Cruises’ ship Millennium in some 23 days. The sail date is June 6.

Home-porting is expected to boost hotel occupancy as vaccinated cruisers arrive a day ahead of their sail dates and possibly stay on island for some additional day at the end of their cruise.
