PHILIPSBURG: The Parliament of St. Maarten has appointed young St. Maartener Caroline Gibbes as its second general secretary. She will take up her post as of August 1. The post became available when Garrick Richardson was appointed as General Secretary of Parliament.
Gibbes, a legislative lawyer, has been employed in the Legal Affairs Department of Government since 2017.
Her appointment was praised by Members of Parliament who had to vote her into her new position. They were especially pleased that she is from the island and has chosen to return home after her studies to serve her country.
Gibbes, who studied at Leiden University in the Netherlands, is the daughter of long-time TV programme host Oral Gibbes.
Parliament has three general secretaries with the third one being Ann Groen-Gumbs. Together, the trio assists the chairperson of Parliament as well as the Presidium of Parliament with meetings and administrative matters.
