POND ISLAND: The late former Anguilla Chief Minister Hubert Benjamin Hughes was “a great friend of the St. Maarten people,” said Prime Minister Silveria Jacobs in her condolence message on behalf of the St. Maarten Council of Ministers to his family, friends, and people of Anguilla.
“Anguilla and the rest of the Caribbean have lost a dedicated public servant whose legacy
will be cherished throughout the region for generations to come,” added Jacobs in her message.
Hughes’ political career began in 1976, where he was first elected to the House of Assembly and served as Chief Minister of Anguilla on three occasions.
Hughes passed away on May 7 in his native Anguilla surrounded by his family.
