PHILIPSBURG: The removal of boat wrecks from Simpson Bay Lagoon and its shorelines, and the non-removal of wrecks from Oyster Pond lagoon has the attention of United St. Maarten Party (US Party) Member of Parliament (MP) Claudius Buncamper.
The MP said it is unfortunate that wrecks on the French side section lagoon are not part of the initiative. He is concerned about the environmental aspect, indicating that the works will not meet its potential long-term goal as the water in the lagoon does not recognise borders.
He pointed out that the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season starts in some 26 days. Buncamper questioned whether any agreement exists with French St. Martin regarding the removal of wrecks from its waters.
What the MP finds “disturbing” is that Oyster Pond Lagoon has been left unattended since the passing of Hurricane Irma in 2017, due to the World Bank’s statement that it does “not carry our works in disputed territories.”
He called on the two sides of the island to work together.
