POND ISLAND: Another mountain is growing on Pond Island. This one is made of scrap metal, old vehicles and other items. Most, if not all, of the materials are recyclable. However, this is not possible on St. Maarten and needs to be shipped elsewhere for processing.
The scrap metal, stored at this location across from the main landfill and close to the Hurricane Irma dumpsite, is usually shipped off-island, but it has been a while since this has occurred. With the annual Atlantic Hurricane Season looming, many residents are concerned about the piles of potential projectiles.
The cleanup of this site will not end the scrap metal issue on the Dutch side of the island. There are still a lot of old vehicles and appliances in the neighbourhoods that need to be picked up and hauled away. This cleanup is important ahead of the hurricane season.
