‘Jumbie Walk’ to take over town today

BOARDWALK: The Soualiguan Giants Moko Jumbie Tribe and the Furious Fire Fury Fire Dancers will take over the Boardwalk today, Friday, from 5:00pm and 8:00pm.

The parade starts at Walter Plantz Square and will move up to The Greenhouse restaurant and back again to the square. The artists will perform at The Greenhouse, Blue Bitch Bar and Restaurant, Holland House Beach Hotel, The Dutch Blonde Bar and Walter Plantz Square. Face masks are required for anyone who wants to take pictures and video of the performers.

Today, April 30, would have been St. Maarten’s carnival grand parade day, but carnival was cancelled again due to the pandemic. The jumbie walk aims to fill some of that gap.

The jumbie walk is also coupled as a fundraising event. Colorfully painted tip pans will be placed along the Boardwalk for anyone who wants to contribute to the foundation and to the first Afropunk Moko Jumbie Festival set for July.

Funtopia Youth Initiative has been training teenagers and young adults to stilt walk and fire breathing since 2014.

The public is invited to view the parade and cheer on the performers while observing COVID-19 precautions to protect everyone.
