Night opening hours may increase to 2pm

POND ISLAND: Businesses with permission to open at night may regain some hours if the midnight closing restrictions are lifted at the weekend. The pending change is expected to take the opening hours up to 2:00am.

Minister of Economic Affairs and Tourism Ludmilla de Weever said on Wednesday that the legal paperwork is in process to extend the night opening hours. This change will only come into effect once the paperwork is formalized. The hope is that all will be in place in time for the weekend.

Opening hours were restricted about two weeks ago as a measure against the UK variant of COVID-19. That variant has taken a toll on the islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. With frequent travel among those islands and St. Maarten, government decided to lessen business opening hours and to restrict travel from those islands.

Government urges the public to continue to take precautions against the virus.
