The St. Maarten government must be commended for bringing in the ban of single-use plastics – plastic bags, plastic straws, and Styrofoam food containers.
This will start July 1, 2021!!!
A webinar will be held by the government on May 6 for all those owners and managers of retail operations who need information on how to partake in this excellent project.
The webinar themed “Beyond a Plastic SXM” team’s motto of Restore our Earth echoes with all of us who realize that big changes need be made to ensure our planet’s future.
How can we all take part in this excellent program?
Ensure that we take our multi-use bags shopping with us.
Use metal/ bamboo straws (we can walk with our own) or paper straws.
Carry our own fold-up rubber containers when we think we will want to take food home with us, or if we go out to buy take outs. Various sizes of these containers are sold at many places on island.
Other Caribbean countries putting this ban in place are: Belize, Barbados, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Bahamas, Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago and the Cayman Islands.
Well done St. Maarten!
