Citizens of the United States and the United Kingdom who are stuck on the volcano-affected island of St. Vincent are to be evacuated to Sint Maarten by cruise ship.
The Government of Sint Maarten is facilitating the evacuation, Prime Minister Silveria Jacobs said in the Weekly Council of Ministers Press briefing.
Arrangements for the further transport of the evacuees to their home countries will be taken care of by the evacuees and/or their governments.
Several organisations on St. Maarten have launched relief efforts to aid St. Vincentians. Everything from clothing and personal hygiene items to non-perishable food and cleaning supplies are being collected. Festival Village is a collection point for donations.
The La Soufrière volcano first erupted on April 9, blanketing St. Vincent in a layer of ash and forcing more than 16,000 people to evacuate their homes. Residents are now plagued by power cuts and disruption to water supplies.
