The Soufrière volcano in St. Vincent erupted for the first time in 42 years on April 9th, causing the evacuation of thousands of people on an island currently hit by two epidemics: Covid-19 and dengue fever. Nearly 300,000 people are affected by this disaster, the effects of which are likely to be prolonged.
On alert since December 2020, the French Red Cross, with its Regional Intervention Platform for the Americas and the Caribbean (PIRAC), deployed a 40-ton stockpile of humanitarian goods to St. Vincent from Martinique on April 13th, with the maritime support of the French Armed Forces present in the Caribbean.
The French Red Cross is launching an appeal for donations to support its actions and those of the Red Cross volunteers of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines who are on the front line to help the affected populations.
