“Samsung” lottery scam hits local phones

PHILIPSBURG: The WhatsApp numbers of several residents have been targeted by scammers claiming they are Samsung representatives and the message recipients were huge winners in a lottery held by the mobile phone giant.

The messages seem harmless with the scammers messaging: “Hello. How are you?” and following up with an official looking digital Samsung employee ID card. However, the telephone number(s) used for the scam carry the country code(s) of Nigeria and other African countries.

The messages continue: “Are you not aware that your [sic] lucky WhatsApp number was Emerged on our C.T.S. S program and won the sum of $800,000.00 and a brand new Samsung galaxy s9+ smartphone from the Samsung 2021 online grand promotion??”

If the recipient chooses to respond to claim the prize, the scammers asked to be provided with personal contact details or for a payment to claim the prize.

Samsung is aware of the scam and urged customers via its website: “to exercise particular vigilance when interacting with third parties over email, internet, phone or text message.”
