The St. Maarten Police has issued a call to anyone who has had their vehicle stolen and has yet recovered it to visit the Philipsburg Police Station to see if one of the confiscated vehicles stored there belongs to them.
Anyone wanting to claim a confiscated vehicle must produce the legal documents proving ownership. Claims to the vehicles may be made until the end of May.
Numerous vehicles were confiscated through investigations in 2020. Most were returned to the rightful owners, but others are still awaiting pick up. Finding the owners for those unclaimed vehicles is difficult because the culprits manipulated the VIN or engine numbers.
Since 2020, the Dutch side Police has a dedicated team of specialized officers for car theft investigations. In the past months, law enforcements from both sides of the island have intensifying controls on all vehicles.
Police urged the public to beware of buying potentially stolen vehicles.
