New dig to begin on Statia

STATIA:  A new archaeological excavation will begin on Statia on April 21 and continue until the end of June on the Franklin D. Roosevelt Airport’s grounds west of the helicopter hangar.

Test trenches excavated at the site in September 2020 revealed archaeological features and artifacts indicative of a settlement which, based on the 1781 map of Statia, is projected to be in the area of the slave quarters of the former Golden Rock Plantation. Evidence has also been found of an Amerindian settlement. The close relation of both sites makes this project extremely valuable for the island’s history.

Sixteen people will conduct the excavation, research, and conservation; 14 are from the United States and the Netherlands. Seven are archaeology students and nine archaeology professionals, including an archaeological illustrator from Yale University and a pre-Columbian archaeology specialist.

They will work in a quarantine bubble until that period ends and they tested negative for Covid-19.
