PHILIPSBURG: Outgoing Labor Minister Richard Panneflek had a recent virtual meeting with newly appointed Director of the International Labor Organization (ILO) Decent Work Team and Office for the Caribbean Dennis Zulu and his support staff.
They discussed the impact of COVID- 19 on the labor market, measures taken by St. Maarten’s government to mitigate the spread, and the local stimulus plan.
Zulu shared developments from other Caribbean countries regarding the impact of COVID-19 on their labor markets and how the ILO can provide technical assistance which could result in labor markets becoming more resilient and robust.
Panneflek emphasized the importance of the availability of reliable and accurate labor market statistics. These statistics can then be monitored through a Labor Market Information System (LMIS) that would allow for the development of evidence-based policies and legislation. He also expressed the importance of the social dialogue between representatives of government, employers, and workers via the Tripartite Committee.
