Tuesday April 27 – King’s Day – St. Maarten holiday. Dutch side celebrates the birthday of King Willem of the Netherlands with an official holiday. Some shops might be closed, as well as government offices, banks, post offices.
Wear orange today!
King Willem Alexander was born on 27 April and to celebrate the people in Holland hold many, many parties, flea markets and parades. This year the celebration will be curtailed due to Covid rules but never-the-less there will still be much fun taking place.
The king will visit one or several cities with his family.
The Dutch royal family bears the name House of Oranje. This literally means the colour orange.
So have a toast to the King with an orange-coloured drink. Aperol Spritz comes to mind or enjoy an “Orange Bitter,” the drink created in 1620 to celebrate Prince Fredrick Henry’s victory.
Friday 30 / Saturday May 1 – Carnival Day and Labor Day
Labour Day is internationally celebrated and therefore is a holiday on both the Dutch and the French side of the island.
