Dust Alert for St. Maarten

The hazy skies over the island may be a mixture of Saharan dust from Africa and volcanic ash from La Soufriere Volcano on St. Vincent.

Weather models indicate that very fine particles of volcanic ash from the erupting volcano may drift across the local area over the next couple of days, according to the Meteorological Department of St. Maarten. This may be combined with the small concentration of Saharan dust already affecting the island.

The combined of the two kinds of dust in the atmosphere may lead to a slight reduction in visibility and may affect people with sensitive eyes and/or respiratory illnesses. All affected persons are urged to take precautions against the dust.
