POND ISLAND: Sharing the joy of escaping into a book is the concept behind the little libraries project that has mushroomed in many places around the world. It is the same on this island where service clubs in the past two years have erected little book depositories outside community meeting places.
St. Maarten/St. Martin has limited bookstores and access to books in various languages can be difficult for people with limited means. This is where the little libraries fill the gap. Anyone can browse the shelves and take a book of their choice from the little libraries.
In these little depositories, the titles vary from classics and children literature to textbooks and magazines.
The concept is to take a book and leave a book. If you don’t have a book to leave, you are not turned away.
Do you have books you no longer read, but want to give to a good “home”, take a trip to the little libraries outside the University of St. Martin, the National Institute of Arts, the Allen Halley Community Centre or the Marigot waterfront. You can stack your books at these spots and maybe collect a few for yourself.
